Big arvo session at Legian…

February 28th, 2006

Today we had a bit of a scout around the Bukit penisular for some surf. We headed over to Dreamlands and also Nusa Dua, both of which were flat and onshore. Feeling rather bummed out, Mikey, Sulli and I headed back home to Legian, to find the beach break glassy, offshore, with some nice afternoon sun coming in. We surfed there from 2pm - 5pm and all got some great waves, with Sulli and I getting our first mini tubes. What a great afternoon treat after a bit of a shitty morning.

Tomorrow we are off to Cangoo, a break north of Legian. The four of us are hoping to set off early and make it a good day’s surfing. Now were are off back out to get some grub and have a few cheeky beers.

Turtle Island & Hyatt Reef

February 27th, 2006

Well yesterday was a rather full day. In the day time Sulli and I rocked on over to Hyatt reef and spent a few hours riding this nice little coral reef break. The swell was up, the wind was offshore and even the sun came out to play! All good!

We then went out for some grub (at what is becoming our local) at the Indo-national. We made a couple of new mates, Wayne and Mikey, 2 Aussie surfers. We then spent the rest of the evening partying the night away until 3am.

Flats, fines and food…

February 26th, 2006

Today was our first full day in Bali, and we awoke to a beautiful day, with light winds and clean surf. We headed down to breakfast in the beach-front restaurant, and then popped in the sea at Legian beach for a quick sruf.

After that we took our little Suzuki jeep over to the east coast and headed to Nusa Dua. The surf was pretty small, so we decided to nip across to the Hyatt reef where Sulli and undertook our first attempt at a proper Balinesse reef break.

We then had the unfortunate luck of getting a flat on our jeep, so we had to get some help from the local partol guys. They were stoked to buggery when we gave them a 50,000 RP tip for their help.

We then headed down to Ul Watu, a legendary surf break, which also has a beautiful Hindu temple. Unfortunately the wind was in the wrong direction and the surf was pretty pants, so we headed back to Legian for a cheeky evening surf.

On the way back we got stopped by the police and got screwed for doing a wrong manoever and got fined.

On our return to Legian, we nipped in for a evening surf, but the weather had come in, so it was pretty messy, still got a couple of rides.

Tonight we have been out to Indo-national, a great Aussie-owned restaurant, we both had a feast and a few beers and the total bill came to about 17 quid.

So all continues to be sweet in Bali, the people are amazingly friendly and polite, our hotel is fantastic and all we need now is a little cleaner surf and a little more sunshine and the stoke will be in full effect.

The General and Pappa hit Bali…

February 25th, 2006

Well we made it to Bali in one piece, after a bitchin’ flight involving us having to circle the coast a few times as the storms were so fierce. We also managed to get struck by lightening on the descent into Denpasar airport, resulting in heavy downloads in the pant region.

We made it to the hotel, which is literally right on the beach and probably a 2 minute walk to the surf. Popped in for a quick dip and it was like getting into a bath, 29 degrees off the top of my head.

After a quick surf we headed to the sunken bar at the hotel pool and featured a brew each, all very expensive at 80p a bottle. Headed out after that for a great feed, and the bill came to all of 9 quid including tip.

Just checking surfing prospects for the morning and all is good in the Indian Ocean hood.

When in Bali ride like an Ottoman…

February 24th, 2006

Well the countdown has begun, after 3 days of constant partying and a dash of surfing, it is now time to get down to business, as Sulli and I are heading to Bali in the morning.

We are staying Legian Beach, and will heopfully be getting some tasty surfing in at Kuta, Legian, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua etc.

The weather is in the high 20/low 30’s, so it should be perfect. We are all packed and ready to rock!

Watch this space!

Best intentions…

February 23rd, 2006

As one does, and then gets an arm twisted in the general direction of alcohol, bad business, esp. when you are too fuc*ed to type out a bloody weblog entry.

Jon, Mark and I went out for a few drinks and a feed with some of his new HK friends etc. Went to a great members club, munched on a 5 course meal, which certainly filled a gap, as I have only eaten a pack of m and m’s today. Had some beef fillet, almost up to the standards of Brule in St. Mags!

Anyway before I end up ranting off on some complete tangent, I’d like to say a huge big respect to Jon, a new and hopefully ongoing friend, good to meet you bru!

One last big up for the evening, to Warren and the rest of the Oz crew, down at Big Wave Bay this arvo, thanks for the chat, all good, and see you when we ride a little Ulu; in Bali!

1 day till Bali man, Sulli is gonna get munched! Haha, reef child!!!

The General meets the South China Sea

February 23rd, 2006

Today was the day that The General met up with a new friend: the South China Sea at Big Wave Bay! All good, although the only thing was that the water was pretty damn cold, maybe pushing 18 degrees and I was just wearing board shorts and a rash vest. I managed 25 minutes on the first session, and then had to get out as I was shivering uncontrolably!

The second session picked up with the sets pushing 5 ft. All good, caught a few waves then again had to come in and drink some hot tea as I couldn’t stop shivering again!

Big Wave Bay is only abut 20 minutes drive from Hong Kong Central, but you feel like you are a million miles away. Clean sandy beach, rolling hills and cliffs, and friendly local surfers were the order of the day!

Hong Kong street markets

February 22nd, 2006

Day two has been pretty cool! Jon and I had a little cruise around the back streets of Hong Kong, checking out the various street vendors. This place is so eclectic, a real cultural contrast to not only South Africa but also the UK.

Last night we were out for some food and drinks, checking out the back street restaurants and bars. We tucked into some nice Thai curries and got on the Singha beers and cocktails. I then managed to get in a full 12 hours kip, nicely!

Tonight we are off to some quiz night for a little social and some drinks etc. Tomorrow we are gonna head over to Big Wave Bay for a little surf! It will be Toe in the South China Sea!

Photos…round 1

Good bye South Africa… hello Hong Kong…

February 21st, 2006

I have just arrived in Hong Kong after a bit of a mission. I was up 5 a.m yesterday and flew from Durban to Jo’burg, then connecting through to Hong Kong for a cheeky 13 hour flight with a 6 hour time difference added on, just for the crack.

I had quite a bit of time to reflect on the plane and think about all the amazing things and experiences I had in South Africa, I would recommend it to anyone, it is such a beautiful and varied country, with some lakka surf spots!

I am sitting here in Sulli’s 12th floor apartment, overlooking the Hong Kong skyline. It is a beautiful sunny day and about 10-15 cooler than Durban, which is actually quite nice!

I think I may have a little kip in a bit and try and catch up on a little sleep, before I head into town later on and have a little look around the shops.
